African American Women Timeline

1492

 In order to keep the Native Americans from becoming slaves, Queen Isabella of Spain claimed indigenous people.

1598

Isabel de Olvero was one of the few people that colonized New Mexico .

1656

 Elizabeth Key was allowed the chance to sue because of her father being white and her religion.

1668

 Black women were taxed. White women were not taxed. It was said that the black women couldn't have as much freedom as the white women.

1711

Queen Anne vanquished the Pennsylvania slavery law

1746

Lucy Terry was known for writing the first African American poem

1773

Phillis Wheatley's published the first book of poems

1780

African American men were allowed to vote, but not the women.

1832

 Maria W. Stewart spoke out against racial inequality.  The Female Anti-Slavery Society was also founded this year.

1833

 The Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society Oberlin Collegiate Institute was founded by Lucretia Mott

1881

Spelman College was founded.


Conclusion: African American women went from being slaves to educators in over 400 years. There are a lot of African American founded schools.
